Finding Your Path in Market Research
Like many professionals in insights, Clare didn’t initially set out for a career in market research. After earning a physics degree at Warwick University, she quickly realized academia wasn’t the right fit. A series of temp jobs and graduate applications led her to a consultancy in London, where she discovered a passion for understanding people.
“I’ve always believed humans are the most interesting thing on the planet, and that’s shaped my entire career.”
Her time in London gave her a strong research foundation, but she had always dreamed of living abroad. That desire led her to take her next big leap.
Gaining Experience in Different Markets
Clare moved to Sydney, where she joined a boutique agency. This shift from a larger consultancy to a smaller, hands-on environment gave her the opportunity to develop new skills and take on a variety of roles.
“In smaller agencies, you do everything yourself. You have to be adaptable and willing to figure things out as you go.”
This experience helped her develop a flexible, problem-solving mindset – one that would become crucial as she later took on leadership roles.
Scaling a Business in Market Research: Leading Through Growth
A few years later, Clare took on an even bigger challenge – moving to California to join MarketCast, an entertainment research firm experiencing rapid expansion. During her time there, the company grew from 75 to over 500 employees, largely through acquisitions.
“Growth is exciting, but it also brings challenges – new people, new structures. Keeping up was part of the journey.”
Clare’s time at MarketCast taught her the complexities of scaling a business in market research, especially through acquisitions and rapid expansion.
Starting a Business and Taking Control
After years of working with global teams, Clare decided to return to Australia and build something of her own. Founding Archer Research & Consulting gave her the freedom to focus on meaningful work while creating a business that aligned with her personal goals.
“Starting out was a rollercoaster, but I’ve been blown away by the support I’ve received. I love what I’m doing now.”
Her approach to entrepreneurship prioritizes balance – growing the business in a way that is both sustainable and fulfilling.
